Okay I am crazy I am posting after my assignment has been graded but I am now using this to keep my family up to date on my son's progress. He has been diagnosed as having a mixed receptive and expressive language delay with more emphasis on the expressive also he may have an oral motor apraxia( small muscle of the mouth have difficulty making the sounds needed for speech). What this all means I am really not sure. We are going for speech therapy now and he had acquired a few new words we need to work on it everyday. I am having a hard time with this as I feel like I am pushing him or hounding him but I know it is for his benefit. Also I am still wondering why my son has a hard time in social situation like at meal time, he appears to get stressed and like to cling to me. Also he get upset when anyone sings to him. I hope this is all just do to his ears but I am not sure. i will be calling Grandview on Monday to see about setting up an assessment for his behaviour to find out if we are dealing with anything else. Also we will be starting preschool there in January music therapy and circle time without parents I hope that helps him to get used to structured activities. I am getting very frustrated and want answers to what is wrong with my son. Sometimes I think he may have ASD but then he loves to play with other kids and he does play correctly with his toys and in the same breath I think he also lines things up sometimes and goes and observes them. AHHH I need to know what is going on. I am getting depressed myself trying to think of how I may help him. I do think 2009 will be a good year for us though and that we will be getting more help at Grandview and the ENT appointment will help also. Now we just need to get through the holidays.

Cold and Flu Season
It seems that every time we go anywhere where there are other children my son seems to get a cold. we were at Grandview yesterday and now he is sick. Germs are everywhere and with toddlers always having things in there mouth it seems they are always getting sick. This is why I make sure my son gets the flu shot. I have heard a lot of controversy lately about the shot and that viruses mutate so quickly that the shot may be ineffective, but the virus needs a host to be able to learn the immune system and mutate to protect itself. When we get the flu shot we are stopping the virus from having a host therefore slowing down the mutation. Also I have heard so many people say they get sick because of the flu shot. What they get is enteric or the common cold, which the flu shot is not meant to protect against in the first place. When they get the real influenza virus they are sick for weeks and I have seen many elderly people die from the flu but never anyone who had the flu shot. That is enough of a case for me to get one and to vaccinate my son.

Hearing Test and Toddlers
My son had his hearing test and passed with flying colours. It was interesting to see how easy it is to perform this test with children. First they get a measure of how the ear is receiving sound, they put a small probe in the ear and send a signal. The ear will then vibrate and based on these vibrations, they get a graph of the results. If little "mountains" appear then the conduction is good. Next you go into the sound proof room and much like how they do an adults test they have sounds on one side or the other at different tones and pitches and loudness. The child looks toward the sound and is rewarded with a little toy playing drums. It was really neat to see because I have always wonder how they do the test in little kids who can't hold up their right or left hand. So one down and one more appointment to go this week. I feel relieved that he hears good, so when he doesn't listen to me he is just being two. Only 20 more years of that to go ha ha.
